Play Pretend’ starts stripped-back and acoustic, melding Mac and spill tab’s intimate vocals with heartfelt and emotive lyricism, before picking up the pace with intricate drum work and hazy lo-fi guitars to create a memorable, genre-defying single. ‘Play Pretend’ sees Mac returning to his collaborative roots, which played a formative role in his musical career as a resident producer in the NiNE8 Collective. The accompanying visual filmed by friends on an iPhone sees Mac and spill tab spending a carefree and joyful day at the beach in LA, singing and dancing together within a serene coastal backdrop.

Mac says of the single: ‘Play Pretend is about refusing to put on an act to please people and accepting yourself for who you are, regardless of what others think. The tune was written with spill tab and my friend Kurisu on the first day we all hung out, it all came together very organically and naturally, and just felt special from the jump’

“Play Pretend” follows the release of Mac’s acclaimed “Cloud Paint” EP, a free-spirited collection of his formative pop punk and emo influences showcasing some of his most forward-facing and irrefutably energetic tracks, including the incendiary Dani Song and the pop-punk-hued celebration of life Feel Better (Infinite Pitbulls).

Last year saw the release of breakneck single IDONTBELIEVEIT, an upbeat danceable track that explored the excitement and uncertainty of falling for someone, alongside the debut EP Make It Thru, which explored Mac’s identity as an artist. His first EP featured candid, honest songs that flowed between his wide-ranging influences and displayed a previously unseen side to his music.

Mac Wetha is the resident producer of the widely admired London-based NiNE8 Collective, producing tracks for crew members including Biig Piig and Lava LaRue, alongside the occasional juggernaut like Aminé. He’s also toured with the labelmate BEABADOOBEE, and the likes of Deb Never and SadNightDynamite.

‘Play Pretend’ is just the first piece of the puzzle from an exciting forthcoming project for Mac, watch this space for more.
