Moscow born multi-instrumentalist Aiko has made a name for herself, combining organic sounds and fusing them into a sonic melody. Her music has been compared to the likes of Bjork, Amanda Palmer, and Florence Welch. To date, the musician has performed at well-known festivals including Sziget, Waves Vienna, Praha Žije Hudbou, and Good fest. The musician has just released her new album “Expiration Date”.

Ahead of her album release, we chatted with Aiko.

What are four words you would use to describe your music?

Eclectic, dreamy and contrasting.

How does a song come together for you? What is the songwriting process?

It is often that a word catches my attention.

What was the first album/CD you ever bought?

I actually never bought a CD, but vinyl in some thrift store for 2€, it just looked nice, don’t remember the name. 🙂 But the first CD I received was Dizzy Up The Girl by Goo Goo Dolls.

What album do you know every word to?

The Neighbourhood – Wiped out!

Share some advice for other bands/artists creating original music?

Just keep writing, really! You get better, you discover your sound and what works for you. It’s a journey, but an absolutely lovely one.

What is the most memorable response you have had to your music?

There have been many sweet messages I received from people of how they enjoy it, how I inspired them to do certain creative things and it’s just something that warms your heart every time. I once signed a passport at a gig!:)

If you could create your own radio show, what kind of music would you feature and why?

Hmm, probably alternative and indie! It’s the music that I love. And of course you want to run a show that features music that you enjoy and can chat passionately about!

Tell us about your upcoming releases?

“Expiration Date” is an album that is coming out on the 17th of July. The idea behind is that everything in our lives expires,  be it a relationship, a situation – good or bad, everything passes. For that reason, we should enjoy every situation fully. The album also reflects thoughts of adulting, youth, and how chaotic it can sometimes be.

When it comes to the way the album sounds, I was going towards a more electronic sound and was working with multiple producers in Czech Republic and UK.
