In this exclusive written interview, Skye Holland opens up about the stories behind her music, her creative journey, and what’s next.
Growing up in Tokyo and being scouted for HappyNs at just ten years old must have been an incredible experience. Is there an early memory from that time that still makes you smile when you think about your music journey?
I was so young, so everything felt huge. But I loved being part of a group of girls who all had the same dream. I still remember doing a show in Harajuku. That one sticks with me. It was the beginning of everything.
When you moved to Victoria, Canada at age 12, how did the new surroundings and culture begin to influence the music you wanted to make?
Moving to Canada was a big shift. It’s way more relaxed than Japan, less busy, more nature, just a slower pace. I spoke English so that helped me settle in. But the real turning point was meeting Steve in high school. That’s when everything started. We just clicked creatively, and that’s when I really started making the music I wanted to make.
You’ve mentioned Jhene Aiko and PinkPantheress as inspirations. What is it about their music or artistry that you try to bring into your own work?
Jhené Aiko has this effortless, chill energy that I love. And PinkPantheress just sounds like no one else. Her beats are so unique. I try to blend that same vibe with something fresh in my own sound.
You’ve worked with producers like Jaxomy, Tep No, and KDrew. What is something unique that each of them brings out in you creatively?
They’re all so different, which I love. Each one brings out something different in me creatively. It keeps things fresh.
You and Steve Kroeger have had many successful collaborations. How do you both keep the creative spark alive after working together for so long?
Honestly, it just works. We’ve been doing this for so long that we know how to bring out the best in each other. There’s no forcing it. When it’s right, it flows.
‘Everyday’ creates a vivid picture of lasting romance with its tender lyrics. What real-life feelings or moments inspired those words for you?
Steve played this melody and it just felt warm. We weren’t forcing anything. We just followed the feeling and the lyrics came from there. It was one of those sessions where everything just clicked. It’s about the simple things. The moments that feel small but actually mean everything. That kind of love you feel everyday, not just the big romantic gestures.
The tropical house production on ‘Everyday’ has a warm, summery feel. How did you and Steve work together to create that sun-drenched, euphoric vibe?
It kind of just happened naturally. Steve started building this beat and it had that warm, breezy feel right away. We leaned into it, kept things light, airy, nothing too heavy. We wanted it to feel like sunshine. The kind of song you play with the windows down.
The whistle hook and acoustic guitar layers in ‘Everyday’ are instantly memorable. Was there a moment in the studio when you realized those elements were special?
We were layering things and trying different sounds, and when those elements landed it just felt complete. Like the song finally had its personality.
With your streams now over 108 million and your music featured on major shows and charts, what is the hardest part about staying grounded and true to your original vision?
I just keep focusing on being creative and making music I love. The numbers are nice, but honestly I’m just grateful there are people out there enjoying what I put out. That’s what matters to me.
If you could choose any artist, past or present, for a dream tropical-house collaboration to end the perfect summer night, who would you pick and what would the track feel like?
I’d say Kygo. His music just feels like summer. I’d want something uplifting but emotional. The kind of song that gives you chills even when it’s warm outside.
